History of Breitling
Breitling was founded by Léon Breitling in 1884 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The company’s focus on precision chronographs and scientific instruments for aviation quickly set it apart. By 1915, Breitling had created the first independent chronograph push piece, and in 1916, the first central minute counter. The company began instrument panels for aircraft and cockpit clocks, which prompted some of its first successful commercial contracts with the British Royal Air Force, the US Army Air Corps, and several other air forces across the globe.
During the 1930s and 40s, Breitling became the prime supplier of onboard clocks to the British, French, Italian, and American air forces, supplying over 200,000 to the British Air Ministry alone. In 1952, the legendary Navitimer was introduced, featuring a circular slide rule bezel for flight navigation calculations. The Navitimer has never been out of production since, a testament to its timeless design and functionality.
After the Quartz Crisis, Breitling made its comeback with the Chronomat in 1984 and introduced the Emergency in 1995 with a built-in distress beacon. Today, Breitling continues to push boundaries with in-house movements, COSC chronometer certification, and a renewed focus on modern, approachable luxury under CEO Georges Kern.
Breitling Collections
Navitimer
The Navitimer is the most enduring Breitling collection and the definitive pilot’s watch. The circular slide rule bezel — with logarithmic scale — lets pilots calculate fuel consumption, ground speed, and rate of climb or descent. Some versions have the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) logo on the dial. Since 1952 with six generations of development, the Navitimer is offered in sizes from 35mm to 46mm. Modern versions use the in-house Breitling caliber B01 with 70-hour power reserve and COSC certification. It’s a watch that combines serious purpose with gentlemanly style.
Chronomat
First introduced in 1984 as a tribute to the 100th anniversary, the Chronomat revived the company during the post-quartz watch resurgence. At a glance, you notice the four rider tabs on the bezel protecting the sapphire crystal — a signature Breitling design element. The modern Chronomat (launched 2020) draws heavily from the original Frecce Tricolori version with a recessed bezel, rollerball crown, and bullet bracelet. Available in 32–44mm, the Chronomat is a versatile daily wearer.
Superocean
The Superocean is Breitling’s dive watch line. The original 1957 model was water resistant to 200m with a rotating bezel, an extremely early dive watch — predating many famous competitors. Modern Superocean Heritage models lean into 50s–60s design with domed crystals and mesh or bead bracelets. More modern models use unidirectional ceramic bezels and range from 36–48mm, with water resistance from 200m to 500m.
Avenger
Built for military pilots and crews, the Avenger is large (43–45mm) and robust. Features include highly legible dials, unidirectional bezels with ceramic inserts, chronograph functions, and GMT models.
Premier
Breitling’s dress watch collection, the Premier is inspired by the 1940s original with clean dials, applied indices, and elegant proportions (40–42mm). It’s the most restrained Breitling offering.
Endurance Pro
Ultra-light, sporty chronograph for athletes using Breitlight case (Breitling’s proprietary lightweight material) with SuperQuartz movement and colorful dials.
Professional
Home to the Emergency (with dual frequency distress beacon) and Aerospace (multi-function digital/analog).
Galactic / Colt / Transocean
Sister collections either phased out or replaced by the new lineup (discontinued but still available on pre-owned market).
Breitling Specifications
Movements
Breitling is one of the few brands to have all its movements chronometer certified by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres). Most modern Breitling watches use the in-house B01 chronograph caliber with a column wheel, vertical clutch, and 70-hour power reserve. The brand also uses ETA/Sellita based calibers for non-chronograph models, each heavily modified and COSC certified. Breitling caliber numbers are distinct: B01 in-house, B17 (ETA 2824 based, three-hand), B20 (Tudor MT5612 based, in partnership).
Materials
- Steel: 316L surgical-grade stainless steel for cases
- Breitlight: Proprietary carbon-fiber composite, 2x lighter than titanium, 6x lighter than steel, and antimagnetic
- Gold: 18k red gold (rose gold) and white gold options
- Two-Tone: Steel and gold (yellow or rose)
- Titanium: Occasionally on Professional/Endurance Pro models
- Ceramic: Bezel inserts, increasingly common
Bezel
The rider tab bezel is the most unique Breitling bezel, featuring four raised tab markers (at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock) that protect the crystal. The Navitimer uses a bidirectional circular slide rule bezel. Diving bezels are unidirectional with ceramic inserts. Each is specific to its collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Breitling watches good quality?
Yes. Breitling uses all COSC-certified chronometer movements — one of the few brands to guarantee this across the entire catalog. In-house B01 caliber has a column wheel with vertical clutch for reliable chronograph use.
Is Breitling a luxury brand?
Yes, though positioned below the Holy Trinity (Patek, AP, VC). Breitling is considered an upper-tier luxury sports watch brand, on par with Omega and Grand Seiko.
Do Breitling watches hold value?
Moderate value retention compared to Rolex. Pre-owned Breitling offers exceptional value for money — depreciation is less severe than many luxury watches but not as strong as scarcity-driven models.
What’s the difference between Navitimer and Chronomat?
Navitimer is a dedicated pilot’s watch with slide rule bezel — aviation oriented. Chronomat is a versatile sports chronograph with rider-tab bezel — the more everyday, do-anything watch of the two.
