Pre-owned Rolex Explorer II ref 16570 (1999) was released in 1989 as the successor to the ref. 16550 and kept the fixed 24-hour bezel and independent GMT hand but introduced some important upgrades that would define the model for the next two decades. This example features the Polar dial, Rolex’s bright white dial with bold black hour markers and hands. It’s not just about looks. That high-contrast layout was designed for optimal legibility, especially in extreme conditions where distinguishing between day and night matters. The GMT hand circles the dial against the engraved steel bezel, letting you track a second time zone or differentiate AM from PM at a glance. Early 16570 models ran on the caliber 3185, and that’s what you’ll find here. Later in the production run, Rolex transitioned to the caliber 3186, but both movements offer true independent GMT functionality.
