Pre-owned Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16613 (1997). Rolex developed the Submariner back in the 1950s, initially furnishing the collection in durable steel. It was meant as an underwater tool watch, so steel was a natural choice for the collection. However, as popularity boomed, Rolex added more and more variety to the collection, including two-tone and, eventually, full-gold models, as well as a date display at the 3 o’clock marker. Ref. 16613 is a relatively modern example of the two-tone Submariner, featuring a blue dial and a blue aluminum bezel. This configuration is often referred to by collectors as the “Rolex Bluesy” and is widely sought after for its elegant, nautical aesthetic. Ref. 16613 was also the very last of the steel-and-yellow-gold Submariners to sport an aluminum bezel. Rolex would replace this model with the ceramic-clad ref. 116613 around the late 2000s.
