It tells a story rooted in the Shinshu region of Japan, where every Grand Seiko Spring Drive watch is crafted. The inspiration comes from Matsumoto Castle at dusk in autumn, one of Japan’s most treasured landmarks. To evoke the castle’s weathered grey exterior and the soft light of evening, Grand Seiko created a warm grey dial unlike anything else in the catalog. The surface features a stunning kirazuri pattern, a traditional Japanese artistic technique often translated as “sparkling painting.” Historically used in ukiyo-e woodblock prints, kirazuri involves applying mica powder to create a subtle shimmer. On the SBGY023, the effect gives the dial remarkable depth and texture that continuously changes as it catches the light. Like many of Grand Seiko’s finest creations, the beauty is found in the details. The dial gently curves to follow the contour of the crystal, while the hands are carefully shaped to mirror that curvature and maximize legibility.
