When Rolex reintroduced the Air-King in 2016 with the ref. 116900, it was a major departure from the more traditional, dress-oriented Air-King models that came before it. Earlier versions were simple, time-only watches with clean dials and understated styling. This new generation took a completely different direction, drawing inspiration from the dashboard instruments of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, a land-speed project that Rolex helped support. The dial reflects that influence with its bold minute scale, large Arabic numerals, and a highly legible layout designed to resemble aviation and speed-record instrumentation.
