This used Panerai Radiomir ref. PAM00424 (2013) embodies Panerai’s rich heritage and military-inspired design. Housed in a bold 47 mm stainless steel case, it features a striking black “California” dial—so named for its distinctive half Roman numeral and half Arabic numeral layout, originally popularized during early Panerai production and later favored by collectors in California watch culture. The dial is finished with gold-toned hands and luminous markers for excellent legibility. Powered by the manual-winding Caliber P.3000, it offers a robust 3-day power reserve and reliable performance. Finished with the signature cushion-shaped case and wire lugs, this Radiomir delivers vintage character, craftsmanship, and unmistakable Italian style.
Pre-owned Panerai Radiomir ref PAM00424 (2013) doesn’t look like anything else in the room. The 47mm polished steel case, wire lugs, and cushion shape go straight back to Panerai’s earliest military-issued designs, but the real conversation starter is the dial. This is a California dial, which means the hour markers are split between Roman numerals on the top half and Arabic numerals on the bottom. The layout dates back to early Panerai references produced by Rolex in the 1930s, most notably the ref. 3646. The “California” nickname reportedly came later from a Los Angeles dial restorer in the 1970s. Regardless of the origin story, it’s become one of the most collectible dial styles in Panerai’s catalog. This example is the later, date-free configuration, which keeps the dial completely symmetrical. Despite its 47mm size, the wire lugs and lack of a crown guard make it surprisingly comfortable to wear. It’s bold, historic, and unapologetically different. Very much the spirit of early Radiomir.
